Moto Jacket Pattern Tour

Hello! Back in June, I had the the opportunity to test a new pattern from Jennuine Design! I signed up to test, forgot about it and then found out I was picked to help test the Moto Jacket. I was so excited for the challenge!

The pattern is a motorcycle style jacket with an asymmetrical zip, shawl collar, knit sleeves, and welt pockets. The great thing about it is that it can be made for boys or girls and it comes in a huge range of sizes. I made the jacket for my almost 7 year old brother, Dominic. He was happy to have a new jacket, but not too happy to have pictures taken.

The first time around, during the pattern testing stage, the jacket was a little too short for this tall little guy. That's the great thing about testing - you can help the designer find out what will make the pattern even better! The final pattern is perfect and the length hits just right.

Minnesota Augusts are a bit too hot for a jacket like this, but I'm crossing my fingers hoping this will still fit in a couple of months!

I upcycled a denim skirt and knit sweater from a thrift store. This is a perfect pattern for upcycling if you want! The lining is cotton fabric with pirates on it - making it even more boy friendly!

I loved being able to use the details from the sweater to make the welts. The pattern challenged me in many ways, as welts and separating zippers are completely new to me. Don't let that scare you though! Jenn's pattern instructions are well written and very easy to follow. It is a great pattern to learn some new sewing skills.
I even learned how to shorten a separating zipper - not as difficult as it sounds with Jenn's pictures and tips!

Here's a closer look at the lining. The pattern offers two options for enclosing the armhole seams. I went with the second option and cut my own double folded bias tape. I love how all the seams are enclosed, making the inside look just as nice as the outside!

The welts aren't perfect, but I'm happy with how they turned out.

I had left over sweater and wanted to add something fun to the back so I sewed on what used to be the bottom edge of the sweater down the center back. It adds some detail and texture to the back.

Perfect for a little boy on the move!

  5. Aww, that turned out really cute! It does look like it has some rather complex details that would be a little intimidating to me as a non-expert sewer, but it's good to hear that her instructions are so clear!
